Various Uses For A Dental Crowns

You are probably familiar with the dental crown procedure, where a custom-fitted tooth-shaped cap is bonded onto a tooth.  However, you may not be aware of how many different types of problems can be treated with a crown.  Dr. Silverina Chua uses crowns, when necessary, to help patients throughout to improve and achieve great oral health.

Severe Cavities

Sometimes a large cavity is too much of a threat to the tooth to be simply filled.  In these cases, the affected part of the tooth is removed, and the crown is placed over it.  This gives the appearance and service of a healthy tooth while protecting the remaining part of the original.

After Root Canal Work

A root canal can leave a tooth brittle and weakened since it was cut off from the nerve and blood supply.  Crowns are often applied to teeth affected by root canal therapy to protect them.  This is especially important for molars and premolars since they exert more muscular force and are relied on more than other teeth.

Building Up an Abutment Tooth

An abutment tooth is used as a connector for a bridge or a removable partial denture.  If the original tooth is needed as a connector but is not the right size or strength, a crown is sometimes added to give the support it needs to act as an abutment tooth.  This is known as a “surveyor crown.”

Cosmetics

Sometimes a crown is used when a person wants to improve the look of their smile, but a veneer is not possible or practical.  If the tooth structure is severely fractured or decayed, or if the person grinds his or her teeth, crowns are a more durable option than veneer.
